We interrupt the usual rhythm of our summer holidays, somewhere along the deep-blue shores of an Aegean island, because the Earth, it seems, has begun to tremble. On 15 August 2026, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in Indonesia, causing widespread destruction across East Nusa Tenggara and damaging thousands of homes and public facilities. Strikingly, this event came only five days after the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on 10 August, and less than two months after the major earthquakes that affected Venezuela on 24 June. This remarkable succession of powerful seismic events offers another valuable opportunity for investigation through traditional mundane astrology: can the potential for such destructive manifestations be traced in the relevant mundane charts?

Before we enter into the astrological details, however, it is very important to emphasize that events of global significance—or, more broadly, events of a collective nature, such as an earthquake, a change in ruling power, wars, disease epidemics, and similar developments—are examined astrologically through a layered hierarchy of time and place. It would be a mistaken approach to examine only the astrological chart of the event itself—for example, the exact astrological moment at which an earthquake strikes. Such a chart, the event chart, belongs to the lowest level of astrological investigation when dealing with collective events.

The way of our analysis can be made easier to understand if we compare it to a stone falling into a still lake and creating concentric ripples around it. These ripples may symbolize the different levels of astrological cycles, from the largest and most general to the smaller and more specific ones. The analogy, of course, concerns the relationship between the cycles, not the direction in which real waves spread. In a lake, the wave begins small and moves outward; in astrological analysis, the astrologer follows the opposite path. The process begins with the largest cycle and gradually moves inward toward the smaller ones, as if following the concentric ripples back toward the point where the stone entered the water.

The astrologer therefore starts with the broadest historical framework, such as the horoscopes of Great Conjunctions, and then progressively narrows the investigation through the horoscopes of Ingresses, Eclipses, Lunations, and still smaller temporal indicators, until reaching the specific place, time, and event. In a sense, each smaller cycle is contained within the larger one and does not independently create an event; rather, it specifies, narrows, and times the possibilities already established by the broader cycles.

For our astrological investigation of the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in Indonesia on 15 August 2026 we will use the Aries Ingress horoscope (AI). The Aries Ingress horoscope is a mundane chart cast for the exact moment the Sun enters 0* Aries, calculated for the geographical place whose affairs we want to investigate. The Aries Ingress is the annual horoscope for a place, indicating the potential for the astrological year ahead.

The Aries Ingress Horoscope

As you see, the earthquake potential here is very strong.

At first glance, the Nodes fall directly across the IC/MC axis, immediately placing considerable emphasis on the 4th- and 10th-house axis. Because they occupy the angles, their influence becomes especially prominent, suggesting that the matters signified by these houses may manifest in a more dramatic or conspicuous way during the astrological year.

The IC is particularly striking. Here we find Mercury, traditionally associated with earthquakes as the “wind of the earth,” in a very poor essential condition. Its close conjunction with the IC ties this disturbed Mercurial quality directly to 4th-house matters: the land, the ground, and the physical foundation of Flores Island. Mercury is therefore not merely present in the chart, but strongly anchored to the part of the horoscope most directly concerned with the earth itself. Its conjunction with the North Node further amplifies this testimony, increasing and intensifying the Mercurial influence and, with it, the potential for instability and turbulence connected with the ground.

It is also important to note just how heavily afflicted the 4th house isin this chart. The Moon, Lord 8 of death, falls by antiscion directly onto the 4th house cusp, bringing the testimony of mortality into an area of the chart already disturbed by Mercury, the “wind of the earth.” This further connects the 4th house with danger and destruction affecting the land itself.

The Moon is not acting alone, however, as it is joined by Venus, Lord 6 of accidents, adding another difficult testimony to the same configuration. The indications continue to accumulate within the 4th house: Mars, Lord 12 of sorrow and suffering, is placed there and aspects Jupiter, Lord 1, which signifies Flores Island itself. Jupiter is also aspected by Venus, the accidental malefic and Lord 6.

Altogether, these testimonies form a particularly harmful combination in the Aries Ingress, with the afflicted 4th house repeatedly linking the island, the ground, accidents, sorrow, and death.

 The Lunar Eclipse Horoscope

Eclipses stand apart from ordinary lunations because they occur when a New or Full Moon forms close to the lunar nodes, where the apparent paths of the Sun and Moon intersect. This additional condition gives the lunation greater significance, often marking periods in which an existing development reaches a critical stage or changes direction. Solar eclipses are generally considered the more powerful of the two, but Lunar eclipses also carry their own distinct symbolism. A Lunar eclipse is a Full Moon formed near the nodal axis, yet unlike an ordinary Full Moon, the Moon’s complete illumination is interrupted. At the normal Full Moon, the lunar phase reaches its maximum expression through the light it receives from the Sun; during an eclipse, that expression is temporarily diminished. Symbolically, this can point to a weakening, obstruction, or temporary loss of effectiveness in whatever the Moon represents, while at the same time drawing greater attention to its receptive and dependent nature.

The Lunar Eclipse horoscope cast for Flores Island gives a clear testimony. The 6th house, associated with injuries, accidents, and the harsher circumstances of life, is heavily occupied, while the majority of the planets are disposed by Jupiter, Lord 6. Jupiter itself is placed in the angular 10th house, considerably increasing its accidental power and making the matters it signifies highly manifest.

The Lord of the Eclipse is Mercury, the traditional significator of earthquakes. Mercury becomes one of the principal malefic agents in the chart because its antiscion falls directly upon the Ascendant of the eclipse. The chart is therefore strongly marked by Mercury, which is itself severely debilitated by detriment and fall. Among Mercury’s traditional significations are the movements or “winds” within the earth, giving its prominent and afflicted condition particular relevance in the context of seismic activity.

Venus, Lord 1 and therefore significator of Flores Island itself, is placed in the 6th house of accidents and injuries. By antiscion, Venus opposes the Saturn–Neptune conjunction. Saturn is Lord 4, signifying the land and ground of the island. Neptune adds a further symbolic testimony: in classical mythology Poseidon/Neptune is the “Earth-Shaker,” whose striking of the earth with his trident causes the ground to tremble.

In contrast to the Aries Ingress horoscope, the Lunar Eclipse provides several strong triggering testimonies. Most importantly, the nodal axis of the eclipse falls directly upon the IC of the Aries Ingress. The IC signifies the land and ground of Flores for the astrological year, so the eclipse directly activates the 4th-house testimony already present in the ingress.

This contact does more than simply emphasize matters concerning the land. The nodes sharply focus the eclipse upon the ingress 4th house cusp and thereby reactivate the difficult configuration previously identified in the Aries Ingress. The eclipse consequently links 4th-house matters with Mercury and its terrestrial significations, while simultaneously engaging the accidental malefics of the ingress: Venus as Lord 6, the Moon as Lord 8, and Mars as Lord 12. The Lunar Eclipse therefore functions as a powerful trigger of the adverse potential already contained in the annual ingress chart.
